My students need more current informational text to read daily, such as these 18 subscriptions to Time for Kids. They also need to see the different places around the world with Laminate Maps.
The saying, "Think Global and Act Local" is a powerful statement. I would like our students to be aware of current events and have passion for people who are facing trials. If we can raise a generation who realizes they CAN change the world for the better, the possibilities are endless for them.
My students are a mix of white, black, hispanic and Asian.
They are an inclusion class with 5 special needs children ranging from Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, Aspbergers and learning disabilities. They attend a rural school in Florida, where their main town has 3 lights and a scattering of local businesses. We are a title one school and more than 50% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Most of my students have never been out of the city or state and even more don't know what continent they live on. They have very little experiences and very little prior knowledge of vocabulary of things outside of their box. Our school is very focused on literacy and giving our students the chance to experience more by in school and out of school field trips and guest speakers.
My Project
I imagine that having these current events with Time for Kids will broaden the horizons and motivate our students to take interest in the world around them. I want my students to know that our town is not all there is, but a starting point for them. I recently traveled to Kenya and was able to wander the halls of a private school in Nairobi, I was atonished to see how globally minded these students were! They were well versed in events, tradegies, political campaigns and even weather patterns that were happening in America. I was convicted when I realized that my students would not be able to do the same, and I instantly wanted to change that. I would like to use Time for Kids in my classroom on a weekly basis. My students would be able to read and understand things that are happening in our world and show me on the map where it is taking place. I would like a current event article picked each week that we study and discuss how it has impacted us in the classroom.
I don't believe that I settled into being a teacher.
I believe that I achieved it because it is a noble calling. However, in order to call myself a teacher, I need to inspire and push my students to realize the world doesn't revolve around them, but that they can offer themselves to the world.
