My students feel as though they have very little choice in their education. They feel that they are told what to read, what to do, what to say every day. They have lacked choice that enables them to take more ownership in their education and what they are learning.
My students come from a variety of different backgrounds and come into my classroom with different attitudes toward reading.
Some students love reading while others would rather do anything but reading. I have found over the last few years of teaching that when students have choice in what they read and study, they are more willing to read and are much more engaged in their learning. My students are very willing to learn and try new things; they just need the opportunities to do so.
My Project
I am requesting over 30 different historical fiction novels for students to read and research the time period to analyze the validity of the book. The books range in level and topics. The aim is to hopefully provide all students with a title, topic, and time period that interests them in order to inspire students to learn more and create a great research presentation.
I have witnessed the ability of my students when given control of their education and making learning student-centered as opposed to teacher-centered.
When students are asking the questions, finding the answers, and coming to their own critical conclusions, they are building the skills they need to be successful in life beyond the high school classroom.
