Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being in elementary school and having to sit on the area rugs? My students do it multiple times a day, every day. We spend the majority of our day learning on the rug during whole group and small group instruction. Students also use the rug when they work in small cooperative groups.

I am a teacher in New York.

My second grade class consists of 24 eager to learn eight year olds. My students come from a large variety of backgrounds. My students love to work on the rug together during centers, book clubs, guided reading and project time. They also enjoy time on the rug for quiet reading and writing. The rug is a place of comfort for my students.

My Project

The rug that they are sitting on now distracts them from their whole group lesson time. The rug is falling apart in many areas and they do not have their own space. I feel their energy will be contained with the new rug that has a special place for them to sit. This will help them concentrate more and enhance their learning. The rug will also help them organize into small groups so they can work together. It will make them want to come to school because the room will be so inviting.

It would be so exciting to enter the room with the class and see the new rug!

This rug will impact all of the students in my class because they will be excited to come to school. Their learning will be enhanced because they will be able to have their own space in the classroom. It will also help organize them into small groups for learning games and projects.
