Give Our Class the Gift of African American Literature!

My students need a few class sets of short novels and books for our class library to expose them to the wonders of literature.

Exposing young people to their cultural heritage through exceptional literature is the key to a truly comprehensive curriculum!

The students in our fourth grade classroom are blessed to finally be back in New Orleans, benefiting from education and a staff that truly believes in their potential. However, the disadvantages of educational backgrounds disrupted by the chaos of the storm and its aftermath, and a previously negative experience with the New Orleans school system have left their mark on our kids. Despite the rich and vivacious cultural heritage these children have here in New Orleans, none of them have been adequately exposed to African American literature. The basal readers (containing only excerpts of novels and short stories) can make reading a bland and banal experience for these children. For a group like ours that struggles to read well and fluently, a lack of reading resources is a MAJOR obstacle to success.

Class sets of award winning novels, and poetry by historic authors such as Langston Hughes will impart in our children the knowledge of, and pride in their rich heritage. Beyond this, extraordinary literature implants a strong desire to read, and become enlightened by books. In a school where reading and writing skills suffer greatly, a spark in the imagination of young students will be a true blessing.

This is your chance to give our children the gift of literature-- the chance to read groundbreaking and inspiring work by African American authors. Our children are eager to read true literature, and they deserve the chance--please help make this happen. What possibilities, if given the opportunity...
