Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being 5 years old? It can be very difficult to sit still at that age, especially on a rug full of other 5 year olds! Carpet squares give each child their own space and make it a little easier for them to sit still.
My students are kindergarteners at an urban school in New Jersey.
Our school goes from kindergarten to 8th grade and has over 1,000 students. Most of my students received free or reduced lunch. Despite the difficulties they may face at home they still come to school excited and eager to learn!
My Project
I am requesting a set of Alphabet carpet squares. These carpet squares can serve many purposes. First of all they will give each student their own place to sit during whole group instruction. In kindergarten, much of the teaching I do takes place in our carpet area on the floor. The carpet squares will allow the students to have their own area to sit in and cut down on arguments. The carpet squares can also be used as an instructional activity. We can use them to identify alphabet letters or put the letters in order. There are so many possibilities.
This project is so important because it will help give my kindergarteners a better experience in my classroom.
We will have the flexibility to meet anywhere in the classroom instead of only where they carpet it. I can also use the squares to meet in small groups. There are so many possibilities when it comes to using these carpet squares.
