My students need lab safety supplies (safety goggles, gloves, aprons) as well as science starter materials (Owl Pellet kit, hot plate) to begin experiments.
As an educator, my job is not simply to teach my students content. I take it as my personal challenge to inspire students to dream and become anything they want. So my passion this year is to break the old stereotype that "girls aren't as good at math and science." So I began a GEMS Club.
My students are girls in the 4th and 5th grade.
They include young ladies of all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. My girls are breaking the mold of what "girls" should be. They love to explore, experiment, and get dirty! These girls are being taught self-reliance and confidence.
My Project
My students would be thrilled to receive these science supplies, because funding is difficult to find in any school system. As a first year program, we are making the best of what is on hand. However, with a simple starter kit of materials, we could dig in with dissection of owl pellets, make formulas of all kinds with our hot plate, clip current event articles out of TIME for Kids Magazines, and have the necessary safety equipment for just about any experiment!
My girls will learn the importance of lab safety above all!
This project will make a difference for many reasons!
First, my girls will see first hand that people in the community believe in them. Second, that it is through overwhelming generosity that any program is successful. Finally, the questions that will come up in the GEMS club is proof of our girls' strong curiosity for the world around us. Because, let's face it, they are the world around us!
