My Students

We are in the stone ages! Please help us escape these dinosaurs! My gifted students are on fire for blogging. They love researching current events and creating blogs to make other students aware of the happenings in our community and around the world. The only problem is our technology is outdated!

My students are academically gifted students who excel in the classroom.

They are current and future leaders. My students are extremely motivated and readily accept challenges. In fact, many times, they go in search of their own challenges. One of my students created his own webpage to help others learn about his brother's health condition. Other students create blogs to make the public aware of environmental issues we face in our community. These students attend a rural, public elementary school in North Carolina. We have an abundance of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. I am impressed with their curious natures. They are so inquisitive about technology and how they can use it to find information and publish information. It amazes me that they can take one thing I have shown them and run with it in ways I never dreamed they would. These children are the ones who will be building our future. It certainly looks bright!

My Project

Having two tablets in our AG (gifted) classroom would enable students to have access to high speed Internet services. This would help with publishing the investigations and research students conduct. Students are creating their own blogs and webpages. They do this to put information they collect in the hands of other students in our school and around the world. We are beginning to Skype with schools in our county. My sixth graders recently completed a Holocaust unit. They would like to set a date to have a live cam session with a holocaust survivor in France, but we are on hold until we get the camera and the high speed Internet that the tablet would provide. Students will create a blog using the tablets and then go into the fourth and fifth grade classrooms sharing the information they learned from the survivor. They will also go to their blogs and respond to the question, "How do children of tomorrow avoid the mistakes of yesterday?" So many will be affected with so little.

The type of student I teach is inquisitive in nature, thirsty for knowledge, and has the brain power to do so much more than what they are currently exposed to.

We have several computers in our classroom. They are all hooked up to one central computer. This makes researching, blogging, and glogging on the Internet next to impossible. The wait time for a page to pull up is sometimes several minutes. I have a wireless router in my room with speed of light Internet access, but no way to tap into it.
