Gifted and Talented 1st Graders: Help Us Get Organized

My students need table bins, folders, and a mailbox center to improve their organization skills, to create independent and successful learners.

My Students

"I can't find my homework!" "Where is my pencil?" Statements and questions like these are a constant occurrence in my classroom due to the lack to organizational supplies provided.

First grade is a crucial transitional year bridging up from Kindergarten.

I make organization and personal responsibility a priority in my classroom, but my students need organizational supplies to become independent intellectuals. I teach first grade at an urban elementary school in New York. My students are insightful, always looking to fill their brain with information but lack the organizational supplies to teach them to be responsible for their own work.

My Project

It is a challenge to teach organizational skills without the proper materials. I've asked for the most important school supplies for helping my students stay organized throughout the school year. As students enter first grade, I assist them in their organizational skills by providing color coded folders for individual subjects, so students can easily differentiate between their folders. As for homework and end of the day routines, I provide the students with a homework packet and my classroom helpers distribute important school handouts. As a result, many of my students tend to lose the paperwork they need or their parents need to receive. By using a classroom communication center, all of my students work will be organized in their designated slot, creating an easy way to communicate with my students.

This project is of such importance because organizational skills need to be addressed at a young age to ensure responsibility and a sense of pride in oneself as students move into upper grades.

With the help of these supplies, my students will learn responsibility and how to take care of their belongings.
