Getting An Early Start

My students need a planter and a planter set.

My Students

My students live in rural Maine with cold temperatures and snow on the ground until April. In order to get an early start on a schoolyard garden they need to start seeds in the classroom.

My students are high school seniors enrolled in a student-driven curriculum related to agriculture and the need for growing food as a boost to the local economy as well as a way to improve the environment.

Our school is situated in an area with strong agricultural roots, but modern life is eroding the students knowledge and interest in maintaining the farm culture. This project will connect the students with their community and its heritage as an agricultural center. It will also allow the students to grow some crops to serve in the shool cafeteria.

My Project

With a growing system in the classroom my students will have a hands-on experience of the process of growing as well as the joy of harvesting food grown through their efforts. This will encourage students to plant a small garden at their homes. The nutritional value of locally grown food is indisputable as is the environmental benefit of increasing the green plants exhaling oxygen into the environment. The students have built a compost bin and garden waste will be recycled to complete the nitrogen cycle.

This project is important because it will show students that they can make a difference in their own lives as well as the lives of their families and community.

The pleasure derived from presenting school grown greens, tomatoes and squash to the cafeteria staff will be unsurpassed as a way to improve student pride in themselves and their achievements.
