This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever had to sit through a long meeting or workshop? I have, and even when the material is highly engaging, it is extremely difficult to sit in a seat for two hours straight, let alone a whole work day. This is what it’s like for many students in school.

My students are enthusiastic and inquisitive learners.

The majority are English language learners, and over 95% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. To better prepare my students for middle school and beyond, I provide a rigorous curriculum which requires a great deal of focus. As you might imagine, fifth graders can be very active. I do my best to give my students multiple opportunities to move between the rug and their desks throughout the day, but they sometimes need to work on longer projects, such as writing or art, for extended periods of time.

My Project

An AlphaBetter desk is a tall desk where students can choose to stand or sit on a stool. Sitting for an extended period of time is challenging for most people, especially ten-year olds who need some freedom to move around and expend excess energy. Standing helps improve circulation and increase focus. With an AlphaBetter standing desk and stool, students would have the option to stand during lessons or while working on more time-consuming projects.

Sitting still at a desk all day long is not conducive to productive learning, yet students are often expected excel under such restrictive circumstances.

I believe that students need to have the option to stand and move around so they can better focus. An AlphaBetter desk and stool in the classroom would provide my students with more opportunities to learn in a comfortable environment.
