This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember how you learned to write and spell? You probably asked for a lot of help along the way!
My first graders are just becoming proficient writers, and it is exciting to see how their thoughts and ideas spill out onto paper.
They are proud of their budding writing skills, but also eager to learn more. One area that many of my students struggle with is spelling.
My Project
I often encourage my students to use invented spellings so that they can practice sounding words out independently. However, we also acknowledge that learning to spell is an important skill. The twenty-five picture dictionaries I have requested would allow my students to be more independent as they write, but would also give them the correct spellings that they need. This would be a win-win for everyone!
Please help my first grade authors get the resources that they need to become independent writers.
Watching them reminds me that I should never take the written word for granted. Putting thoughts down on paper can be hard work! But together, we can make that process a little easier in first grade.
