This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The English Language learners in my intervention classroom face so many challenges as they embark on their lives as readers; one challenge I hope to eliminate is that of finding books that are cool, and having enough of them to keep them hooked throughout the year.

These students attend a public low-income dual-immersion bilingual school.

As a result, the majority of our students are language learners who need some extra enthusiasm as they tackle the challenge of becoming bi-literate and reading at grade level. While my classes total about 25 students in grades 1-5, my library is the one used by adult volunteers who help our 30 lowest readers in grades 3-5. These kids are the ones who need to get hooked on reading-- and fast! -- so we can help them build their skills and knowledge and progress toward grade-level.

My Project

After surveying my school's teachers and some of my students' parents, I have narrowed down these titles as being books of the most engaging series for young readers at our school in the past three years. These books are the ones that get read the most, and get lost the most often! It is our jobs as teachers to make sure that we are never at a shortage for these books. With an ample library, teachers and adult volunteers alike will be able to get our lowest students interested in reading. They'll build their essential skills while truly understanding how fun, engaging, and awesome reading can be on a personal level. The real project here is to help create lifelong readers; to do that, we need to get the kids hooked, and keep them hooked on characters and stories they love.

When students read great book series, they build upon their prior knowledge to create vivid and entertaining stories in their minds.

Having familiarity with a series makes books more accessible and more exciting to read, which motivates kids to keep reading rather than giving up and/or feeling discouraged. Reading engaging book series can provide a huge confidence boost and a precious opportunity for introducing foundational reading skills to the students who need it most.
