German Puppetry

My students need zoo animals, fairy tales and Safari Pals puppets, plus felt shapes to give voice to their German language skills.

My Students

Many of my students feel self-conscious of their German language voice. They need puppets and a stage (provided by an Eagle Scout candidate) to give them a safe platform from which to develop their language abilities.

My 7th and 8th grade students come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, but in the German class, they are all on a level playing field!

They find it intriguing to be confronted with a universally (to them) foreign language. The school is a public middle school in Utah.

My Project

The class is conducted primarily in German...with an occasional English phrase to help in clarification. The students enjoy sharing their classroom experiences with their siblings as they learn to play games, read simple books, create crafts, and develop language skills all -- "auf deutsch" -- in German. The idea of the puppets with a stage is to give the students (especially those who like the language but lack the confidence to display it in public, even my classroom) a safe, hidden platform from which to develop and perform their language skills. As the students transfer the speaking from themselves to their puppets, they will become more bold in their speech and therefore more proficient and confident. The pronunciation of the German language can be embarrassing, so being able to pronounce the words in the voice of a lion, for example, will reduce, or perhaps eliminate the embarrassment. I have requested blank puppets, character puppets, felt appliques, etc. to help them begin.

Sometimes in our school, students congregate in their ethnic groups.

Through German, my students are able to chip away at the barriers which separate them. They work in a common setting on an equally uncommon subject. As they develop commonality through the German language, they also develop bonds which unite. Your donation will allow my students to further break down these barriers by giving them an even greater opportunity to work together through puppetry and other crafts.
