My Students

We live in a technology rich world, but my students are being left behind because of a huge lack of technology at our school and in their homes.

My students attend a small rural school with less than 120 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

They have limited access to technology, with most of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. They are accustomed to working on farms and ranches and therefore thrive in a “hands-on” learning environment. Many have limited experiences outside of their environment. Some have never traveled more than 100 miles from their homes. Many do not have computers in their homes; those that do often do not have Internet connections. Even cell phone coverage is limited. For most of them their only exposure to the technology used outside of their world is at school. All of the students in the school participate in sports, academic competitions, and community service events. They are truly active members of their community. Many are the third generation attending this school. These kids are bright and eagerly embrace learning when new technology is incorporated.

My Project

I am requesting a GPS device which will allow students to learn about Global Positioning Systems. They will learn about satellites that orbit the earth and how GPS devices work by communicating with these satellites. They will learn about latitude and longitude mapping and what these numbers mean. They will learn how GPS tracking works, and how navigation systems in cars work. Student will participate in scavenger hunt using GPS coordinates to locate clues and items hidden around the campus. They will create their own hiding spots and record the coordinates for others to play this game.

This project will allow students to see and communicate with a world outside their small environment.

It will give them knowledge of a tool that is currently being used in a technology rich society, but is also being used by farmers and ranchers around the world. This is an excellent way to relate technology to the rural community they live in.
