My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin. This is the way children learn, and this is the way I aspire to teach.

This project is for Seventh Grade students.

They attend a K-8 school in a high poverty, rural area in Northern California. The students at our school are very active, and thrive when given hands-on activities. Living in a rural area, they spend much of their free time outdoors, and they enjoy projects where nature is brought into the classroom.

My Project

My students need a Flightless Fruit Fly Kit, a hands on approach to learning genetics. This project will allow my students the opportunity to experience genetics in a way that will help them understand a very complex concept. They will design and conduct experiments that will illustrate simple Mendelian genetics. A few students may even discover their next science fair topic.

Science should not be taught out of a textbook.

Children learn by doing, and this project allows them to learn a difficult topic, in a way that they will remember. More importantly, I want them to enjoy Science as a process, and not just something to be read in a textbook.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
