Do you remember learning about the parts of a plant? You probably looked at a picture and filled in the spaces on a worksheet. I want my students to learn about the parts of a plant in a creative way. I want them to see the beauty of nature, not learn how to fill out a worksheet.
I teach a great bunch of gifted students.
They are always wanting to learn and do more. One of our gifted standards is: "I will develop and practice creative thinking and creative problem-solving skills." I am constantly looking for ways to help my students develop their creativity, while also covering their grade level standards in reading, math, language arts, science, and social studies! I want my students to learn, not because they have to for a test, but I want them to learn because THEY want to learn!
My Project
How would you like to learn about the parts of a plant using a real plant? Have you ever witnessed a seed bursting through the soil? Have you ever used nature to create something beautiful? I want my students to experience all of this! My students will grow plants in our classroom using the GrowLab Garden and seed planting kit. We can cover many of our life science standards doing this. It would be great to go outside and accomplish this, but living in NE Georgia, the growing season doesn't coincide with the school year! I also want to take it a step further.
As our plants grow and flower, my students will create using the beauty of nature! We will press our plants so that we can use them to label the parts of a plant. We will also use our pressed plants and flowers to create bookmarks using the bookmark making kit. But bookmarks are just the start. We will be able to use our pressed flowers to create other beautiful projects. We can even make thank you cards for our donors!
By donating to our project, you can help my students develop their creativity and learn about plants at the same time!
They will create bookmarks using the beauty of nature as they also learn about plant growth and plant parts. As a bonus, we will transfer our plants to our butterfly garden, where we will further discover the beauty of nature!
