FVR: The Missing Ingredient in Foreign Language Instruction

My students need a variety of 23 books in Spanish.

My Students

The power of reading. My students will have a higher level of proficiency and better vocabulary, writing, and grammatical development. Currently my classroom contains no selection of books.

I teach at a high school and it is missing an important element in foreign language teaching.

My students do not have access to a library of Spanish books and I would like to provide them with one. My students are motivated and enjoy learning Spanish. They come from a wide spread of backgrounds, some with several financial opportunities and others with none. The school is in a very rural location and a lot of students live on farms or have family members that work in agriculture. A lot of my students either play a sport and/or have a part time job. The school was remodeled approximately ten years ago but lacks educational materials due to budget concerns. It is a great school with fantastic teachers and most students like attending the school. It is a medium size public school (650 students) that serves three towns. It is my favorite place to be.

My Project

Free Voluntary Reading is one of the most powerful tools that exists in language education. It provides a foundation so that higher levels of proficiency may be reached. Learning a language happens by obtaining comprehensible input in a low-anxiety situation and that is precisely what Free Voluntary Reading is. My students will have better reading comprehension and it will result in writing style, vocabulary, spelling, grammatical development. I will be able to provide my students with a reading day, where they will individually choose which book they want to read. When they are finished with one, they can choose another. These books with the reading program will change the atmosphere and direction of my classroom: towards proficiency in Spanish.

Your donation will allow my students to enter the powerful world of reading.

They will be hooked to the books and will want to read more. With your help, all of my students will become better not only in Spanish but also in other subjects. Knowing a second language is beneficial across the curriculum and reading these books will help tremendously. Thank you.
