Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Special Ed students have often faced challenges in their school life. Using hands on manipulatives to understand fractions will give students the confidence and ability to master concepts that they may have not had before.

My students are 5th grade special needs students who have an I can attitude.

They can reach their goals no matter what it takes to get there. Being in a small self contained class, these students are well behaved and eager to please. Since some of our students have been together for 4 years, we think of our group as a family, not a class.

My Project

My students need fraction tiles. Fraction tiles are plastic strips that are cut in various fraction lengths, 1/2, 1/5, etc, to compare to 1 whole. A visual and hands on manipulative helps students who are unable to think abstractly about a problem understand why 1/5 of a pizza is less than 1/2 of a pizza.

Students with special needs often go through school feeling like they cannot succeed.

With a different approach to a concept, or extra help, these students are able to master concepts and gain a confidence in learning that will encourage them to be life long learners.
