This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When my students enter the classroom, they become readers, authors, scientists, mathematicians, and artists. They are risk takers who need to move, collaborate, and explore.

Long gone are the days of teachers standing in front of a class yelling "sit down and be quiet!" Our 21st Century learners love to explore the world around them through experiences, not lectures in the classroom.

They learn through collaborating with their peers in highly engaging meaningful lessons, hand-on activities, and real world experiences. Our students learn about how plants and animals are interdependent. They learn about oviparous animals and watch chicks hatch in the classroom. Students become botanists and nurture seeds into seedlings, roots, stems, and then flowers. As meteorologists, they study weather patterns and predict weather. As physicists, students learn about force and motion. They engineer houses that can withstand powerful forces. All of these activities happen through reading, writing, mathematics, and arts through integrated units of study. Not a bad resume for a 5 year old, a 21st Century Learner!

My Project

There are physical limitations in traditional classrooms, i.e. sitting at rows of chairs and tables. I am creating a contemporary learning space (CLS) where students have the autonomy to choose where they sit, stand, stretch out, and most importantly, be engaged in a lesson. Research supports the idea that when children move, the blood flow increases, and so does brain power. The Hooki stools and stability balls allow for the students to stay in motion without distraction. Humans were not hard wired to sit for long periods of time and some students need more movement than others. With the stools and balls, they can direct their need for movement in a positive way! Research also shows that this lightens a student's cognitive load and allows them to achieve even greater things in the classroom.

Teaching has evolved and the classroom environment should too.

Imagine how fun it will be for these little learners to bounce on a bright yellow ball or rock back and forth on a blue stool while sitting next to a friend and learn about the world around them. The last 2 quarters of the school year are the most intense...lots of learning before the new year and lots of testing too. By donating you will be providing a group of energetic kindergarteners tools to help them be successful in school.
