My Students

Students learn best when they are excited by what is going on in class. Every student that I have had dissect a frog is amazed and proud when they can identify the internal organs. Some of my best teaching moments have been during this activity.

My students attend a public middle school in West Virginia.

My school has a large number of students who receive free or reduced lunches. Most of my students enjoy coming to school and the activities that we provide for them. I strive to give them a variety of opportunities so that they will continue to be eager learners.

My Project

My students give me mixed reactions to the idea of dissections - but I have found that they benefit from the experience - even if they are a passive partner. By dissecting a frog students get to see what a real heart looks like. They can feel the texture of the lungs, see the lobes of liver and observe how the gall bladder is nestled between them. They get a first-hand look at the different systems and make connections to how these same systems work in their own bodies. There is no way to compare learning anatomy by computer or coloring sheets to actually seeing/feeling/touching the actual organs and observing how they are all connected. Years later, I still have students stopping by to reminisce about the frogs. Also, I have had many advanced students excited to sign up for an anatomy class or zoology class at the high school so that they can continue this type of investigation.

In the past I was able to teach at our local high school.

I was surprised to learn that an honor student could graduate without having completed a dissection during their school career. I became inspired to bring this educational opportunity to all of my middle school students to attempt to broaden their experiences and to open their eyes to new opportunities.
