Fresh Food for All: Creating an Urban Garden

My students need copies of "Seedfolks" to read as part of our service learning project- developing an urban garden for use in the school's community.

My Students

People in urban areas often pay 3%-37% more for fresh fruits and vegetables than people in suburban areas. Studies have shown that less access to these foods leads to obesity, etc. Through the creation of an urban garden, my students are working to combat that problem in their community.

My students are 7th graders at a public charter school in Detroit, Michigan.

90%+ of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. For many, it's a struggle to come to school each day- they don't have reliable rides, they haven't eaten a decent breakfast. Yet, our school continues to show that success is possible, even for disadvantaged students. We recently received the School of Excellence award from the state of Michigan- the first charter to do so. Our standardized testing scores continually surpass the scores of other schools in the city of Detroit that serve equivalent populations.

My Project

Through reading "Seedfolks", my students will be inspired to assist with the planting and maintaining of the school's urban garden. The will experience, through award winning literature, how a garden can bring a community together. They will feel a sense of accomplishment as they see their garden provide food for people in their community who might not otherwise have it. Detroit has suffered greatly over the years, but is gradually making a comeback. Through projects such as the urban garden my school is starting, communities are working together to restore Detroit to it's former greatness.

The use of "Seedfolks" will allow students to have a cross-curricular experience with a piece of literature.

Through "Seedfolks", we will tie together science, language arts, and social studies concepts.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
