Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students in my class need the option to move around throughout the day. Having a plethora of choices would allow them to start at a yoga mat, move to a comfy pillow area, and sit on a yoga ball later. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with learning!
My students are hard working, motivated, and eager learners.
This year, I see that several have the need for brain breaks throughout the day. I see the need sometimes for standing up, sitting on the floor, and working at desks. Right now, we have tables and chairs, and it doesn't feel like the right fit for them. Having this project fully funded would make for a better fit for them. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, and upbringings. What they all have in common, is that they are happily willing to learn. Not only that, but they are hungry to learn. I want to provide the best learning environment to meet their personal needs.
My Project
My materials for this project include pillows, yoga mats, yoga balls, pouf chairs, and other supplies needed for implementing a flexible seating arrangement. Pillows would be used in a reading corner where students could snuggle up to read a good book. Yoga mats can be used with clipboards while students work independently or with a partner on math problems, science research, a writing assignment, or anything else. Yoga balls will be placed at my small group table where students can sit with me to gain additional support in any subject areas. The poufs, along with other materials will allow for students to chose how they'd like to work at their tables for daily oral language, viewing presentations, or other activities.
I just read an article about this by Kayla Delzer called, 'Why the 21st Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks.' In the article she wrote about her experience of implementing this in her classroom. I'm inspired by her passion and dedication.
Research shows that students in today's classrooms are needing brain breaks and choice.
I was able to introduce the article above, but I'd like to further explain why today's classroom may remind you of Starbucks. In the article, Kayla stated that [at Starbucks] she, "usually gravitates towards the comfy seating choices like the couches and big chairs, and yet, I see people choose the tables and chairs over and over." This project will provide them with the tools necessary for success!
