This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you boost the confidence of struggling readers? Have them beat fast readers in a reading contest. Fast readers make simple mistakes when reading Fox in Socks whereas slower readers are more accurate. If they can read the book without mistakes they can keep it and challenge others.

I am the resource and intervention teacher at my school.

Our school is an inner city elementary school with a high proportion of english language learners. All of our students receive free school meals. My students have a learning disability or learning challenge of one kind or another. Some have speech disorders, autism, attention deficit hyperactive disorders or other challenges that affect their success in their classrooms. My students are in grades kindergarten to 6th grade.

My Project

I love the Fox in Socks challenge because my students work so hard to get that book. They get fluency practice without even realizing it. Once they earn the book, I have them take it home and challenge their family and friends. Strong readers make simple mistakes because they read so fast. My students feel like "better readers" because they take their time and thus have better accuracy. You should see the pride in their faces when they complete the challenge and take home the book. They have a concrete reminder of their accomplishment that they can keep forever. This contest boosts their confidence and makes them so excited about reading that carries over to other parts of their lives.

You should see the look on a child's face when he or she is able to complete the book and I hand it to him or her.

For many, this is the first new book that they own, let alone, are able to read independently. The icing on the cake is that when they challenge their family and friends, they see that many people can not complete the challenge. This activity is a truly life changing event for my students and their families.
