Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Cooking is the easiest way to roll math, science, literacy, social studies, and fun all into one! We are privileged to have a classroom equipped with a kitchen and enjoy using it!
I teach Kindergarten at a high-need, low-income community in New Mexico.
I currently have 20 Kindergarten students, 30% of them are learning English as a second language. Budget cuts have left us without money for any resources, books, or other materials! My students are curious and engaged learners.
My Project
We want to incorporate an actual unit on healthy living with our students. The focus of one of our 3 week topics will be healthy eating and nutrition. We want to have cooking committees throughout the year to reiterate and scaffold upon the knowledge we gain throughout this unit. You are making it possible to get materials to inspire healthy habits, and help children understand nutrition, helping students make sense of what a healthy lifestyle looks and tastes like! Many of my student's staple foods are laden with hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and dyes. I feel that if they learn to love healthy foods early, this habit will transfer to the rest of their lives! Cooking is a perfect way for us to incorporate science, math, literacy, vocabulary development, and cultural studies into our day in a fun and hands-on way. Having cooking materials and books about cultural foods and healthy eating, we can prepare our own healthy snacks while learning about caring for our bodies.
Thank you for once again helping bring hands-on, culturally engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences and tools into my classroom.
You couldn't help out a sweeter, cuter, or more curious group of rascals. We appreciate you so very much! Happy Cooking!
