My Students

When was the last time you were excited by the challenge of using a map? Never? My students must learn map skills and its time to bring this skill into the 21st century! GPS units will turn maps into treasure seeking activities, breathing new life and excitement into this necessary life skill.

My students attend a public K-6 elementary school in Utah.

We live in mountain country here, so my students have an innate drive to explore and have adventures. The theme this year in my library media center is "Knowledge is Treasure" so students will be learning a lot about pirates, treasure, and of course maps. The library has plenty of maps but not one of them leads to treasure, in fact they are pretty lifeless. In order to revive this required and beneficial skill, and rescue it from the dark recesses of the library, I want to enlist the students as Treasure Hunters. The most innovative and incredibly engaging way to combine hands-on map skills and a grasp of spatial awareness and distance measurement is through Geocaching.

My Project

My students need five GPS units to make map skills fun and bring some adventure to all subjects through geocaching! What on earth is Geocaching? Geocaching is an inventive and exhilarating hobby that requires the use a handheld GPS device. The GPS units require real map skills. Participants use a variety of methods from tracking their location in relation to coordinates or even through clues in order to discover cache. (AKA Treasure) After learning map skills, students will put those skills to the test and over the course of a month they must solve a variety of geocaching tasks in order to become a Certified Treasure Hunter. These tasks will encompass a variety of mysteries that involve the library and information literacy skills. For example, they might be asked to visit a variety of geocaches to retrieve parts of a book that have been separated, they must then figure out how to put them back in order to make a story.

In my library it's important to me to really help the students to engage with technology, which is an increasingly large part of information literacy.

A foundational component of this is through the use of intriguing lessons that use technology in real world applications. Geocaching with GPS units takes map skills to that next level.
