My students attend a public K-6 elementary school in Utah. We live in mountain country here, so my students have an innate drive to explore and have adventures. The theme this year in my library media center is "Knowledge is Treasure" so students will be learning a lot about pirates, treasure, and of course maps. The library has plenty of maps but not one of them leads to treasure, in fact they are pretty lifeless. In order to revive this required and beneficial skill, and rescue it from the dark recesses of the library, I want to enlist the students as Treasure Hunters. The most innovative and incredibly engaging way to combine hands-on map skills and a grasp of spatial awareness and distance measurement is through Geocaching.
