My students need materials, including 3 butterfly sanctuaries and a larvae set, in order to watch butterflies go through the process of metamorphosis, from larvae to butterfly, while we cover Phylum Arthropoda.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had the opportunity to watch a caterpillar transform into a butterfly? I would for my zoology students to be able to witness this first hand.
My students are juniors and seniors in my zoology class.
I teach in a high poverty school where 75% of our students have free/reduced price lunch. The majority of my students are in my science and medicine academy, wishing to pursue a career in the science field.
My Project
As we study the Phylum Arthropoda, my students will be able to make observations of each process that occurs as they watch the butterfly larvae grow in size, transform into their cocoon, and then finally emerge as beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies, Vanessa cardui. This is something that most have never had the opportunity to experience and would be an amazing to witness firsthand.
Hands-on activities are very important in a science classroom.
Unfortunately, funding is not always available. By having this project fully funded, my students will be able to witness something they may have ever witnessed before. For this opportunity, I am truly excited.
