Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever struggled through a math lesson that seemed beyond your grasp? Many of my students have experienced this same struggle, especially as the curriculum became harder. My students need books and videos to help explain and clarify the math concepts that are currently out of their reach.
My students attend a public elementary school in a urban setting in Massachusetts.
The building is very old but the students love it. Our population is very diverse and there are multiple languages spoken in the school. No matter where they come from though, my students are friendly and caring to one another. They are filled with school spirit and live by the motto, do something nice for somebody else, just because you can.
My Project
One of the best ways for a child to learn and fully grasp a concept, is to become a teacher. Using the camcorder, students will be able to record and explain problem solving techniques for math problems. This will help the student fully understand what s/he is doing. Students who may be stuck on a strategy or concept will be able to watch the video and perhaps find a new or different way to work out the problem.
We have many books at school, but no real library, as every room is being used as a classroom. This can make it difficult for students to find books related to certain subjects, especially math. Having fictional stories about real math concepts will give the students something new to read, as well as help the students learn new concepts.
My students have struggled to learn math and I truly believe the struggle comes from the lack of appropriate materials.
Being able to explain problems and see other student explanations will really help my struggling students see math in a new way. Having reading material that makes math fun and entertaining will encourage my students to practice and will help them remember certain concepts and strategies.
