I am a first grade Mandarin Dual Language Immersion teacher who only has pitifully small amount of books in Mandarin in the class library. My first year of teaching started out great, except that I feel bad that I can’t afford to buy any books to provide the kids a better learning opportunity.
The Mandarin Dual-Language Immersion Program (MDLIP) at our school is one of the oldest and most established programs in Southern California.
Students come from all over Los Angeles County, including from over 13 different school districts, to attend this innovative program. In my class, there are 24 students who have a valuable range of economic, ethnic and linguistic diversity. 80% of the instruction time is in Mandarin.
My Project
My students need 12 books in Mandarin to assist with their language learning and learn about Chinese culture, including the Mandy and Pandy series of books. I will read aloud to the class or small groups. The students will also be reading these books throughout the year. I would have a Show and Tell session every morning, when a student communicates effectively with their peers through guided discussion of book concepts. Students will begin to answer basic questions about what they read, identify and discuss the main ideas presented in books, describe characters in the text, predict, and etc. They will also connect book illustrations with the text and use images to describe the book's settings and events.
As a first-year teacher, I have spent a lot of money out of pocket, and unfortunately I had a car accident on the first day of school and had to save money to buy a car.
We really need your help to build our library. These books will make my students fall in love with Mandarin and Chinese culture. The kids need to read!!
