My Students

Do you remember playing with Legos as a child? Most of our students have never experienced Legos and quickly enjoy interacting with them. We currently have a set of Lego building bricks that were donated to us, but would greatly benefit from a stationary table designed for building.

My students are part of a collaborative classroom with Head Start.

They range in age from three to five years old and come from a low socio-economic area, with many students facing a variety of difficulties. Each class is made up of eight students who have special needs and eight students who are typically developing. There is an AM and PM session, which allow the requested materials to reach a total of thirty-two students in the classroom.

My Project

Fine motor skills involve the small muscle movements. At such a young age our students are still developing their fine motor skills. Many of our students also have documented deficits in the fine motor area. By having a brick building table it would allow further practice of fine motor skills and enhance the building process by providing stability and resistance. Using the brick building table would also allow students the opportunity to foster their creativity, giving them open ended play with endless possibilities. It will also help to develop their thinking and reasoning skills, as they develop a plan before building and work on problem solving throughout the building process. This particular table design also promotes both individualized play and cooperative play with others, both important skills my preschoolers are working on.

This project is important to me because I want to be able to provide my students with hands on, independent learning opportunities.

It will also put such a wonderful smile on my students' faces and that is priceless!
