My Students

After years of working with basal readers, our school district is moving forward and helping students become strong, independent readers through the Daily 5 literacy program.

My first grade students live in a small, rural town in southern Missouri.

The vast majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and face many struggles at home. But my students come to school every day ready to learn. They are an energetic and caring bunch of students who are continuously working hard in school!

My Project

Reading to self is one of the daily components of the Daily 5 program. Students are taught to find good-fit books and a comfortable place to read them. My students need 4 beanbag chairs and 6 cushions to sit on. This will provide them with a comfy alternative to desks and the cold tile floor.

My students are excited about reading independently.

They are learning to pick books that are just right for them, and they are excited about getting away from their desks for more relaxed reading pleasure. Comfy beanbags and floor cushions will provide some "just right" reading spots!
