Financially Literate Students

My students need Microsoft Office 2010, a laptop, interactive whiteboard math software for our Smartboard, and play money to learn about money and budgeting.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I would like to further my students understanding of money beyond counting dollars and cents. It is important they learn lifelong skills that teach them to keep track of their money, budget their money, and save their money for the future.

I teach in an urban school setting whose student population comes from a low socioeconomic background.

All students at my school are on a free meal program due to financial hardship. Despite their economic challenges, my third graders come to school happy and eager to learn. They are excited about sharing what they know and their personal experiences. They are cooperative and work really well together. I teach in a cooperative learning magnet, which focuses on providing student with opportunities for collaboration, discussion, and dialogue as they work on class assignments.

My Project

I will be able to accomplish these learning goals by using the laptop and the interactive white board software to deliver strong and effective first instruction in the area of money. My lesson will be much more engaging and students are more likely to grasp math concepts and improve their problem solving skills. The paper money will be used to manipulate money and act out financial situations with the students. Once students have a good foundation and understanding through my lessons, my next objective is to teach students to use basic functions of Microsoft Excel 2010 to use as a tool for balancing a checkbook, creating a budget, and understanding debits and credits. My ultimate goal is for students to develop financial literacy.

I cannot stress how important it is to teach students how to develop financial responsibility at an early age.

Students know their families struggle financial and understand times are tough, and that our entire nation is dealing with financial problems. The donation requests for this project will provide students with the tools necessary to begin learning personal financial skills in the classroom, which will last them a lifetime.
