My Students

I am very excited to be able to encourage the financial literacy of my students. They will have the opportunity to create and maintain a school/class store. They will create a class restaurant to practice critical math skills. Students will play games that promote real world math skills.

My students are rising 6th graders.

Before they leave 5th grade I want to make sure they fully understand how important math is to the real world. They are always trying to play "restaurant" during their recess. What better way to encourage financial and math literacy than to encourage them to really look at what it takes to run a real restaurant. I want my students to be able to fulfill their dream. Two students had the idea to start selling items, so I would like for them to be able to start a school store. My students come from all over Prince Georges county and are the most motivated children I have ever come across. I want to plant a seed in them to help them reach full blossom.

My Project

By creating a school store students get their first taste of being business owners. Students will be able to take turns promoting their business by creating flyer's. Students will also be able to play stem games and math activities that will further enhance their financial literacy and make all important real-world connections. I am very excited to launch this financial literacy program for my rising 6th graders. Students will use the fake money to count, the manipulative's and games as hands-on learning activities, the printer and paper to make flyer's to promote their business, the fake groceries will be a part of their restaurant inventory, the cash register and money will help them track orders and count money, and the supplies and toys will be the merchandise they will sell in their store. Students will be responsible for keeping inventory, counting money gained, and maintain a clean work environment. Any profits will go toward the fifth grade graduation. Thank you!

This project will make a difference for my students because it lets them see that they can be anything they want to be.

They can set their dreams high and reach for the sky. This project allows students to make a very important connection between math and the real world. I hope to install the gift of financial literacy in my students. Thank you for all your support!
