My Students

Did you learn about personal finance, credit, or investing in the stock markets when you were in school? Me neither and it still isn't taught in a regular classroom setting. The Charity Student Investment Project gives students MUCH needed financial education and real-world investing experience.

CSIP students are 9th-12th graders, desire a financially prosperous future, and are highly motivated to make their lives better than they currently are.

They recognize hard work and education will make a huge difference in their ability to succeed. Our southern California school is extremely diverse and the students in the CSIP reflect that diversity. I have ESL students or students in the free lunch program working/learning with AP students or students from financially secure families. That being said, the differences do not matter to my students. Their common goals and interests bring them together during their lunchtime and after school to discuss personal finance, stock market investing, careers in finance, and philanthropy. My students work hard to raise investment funds, research investments, and make profitable investments to support our Education Foundation. Students personally manage our real-money investment portfolio and 100% of the investment decisions are by majority vote.

My Project

The Charity Student Investment Project is a student club, not a class. Students donate their lunch break twice a week to meet in our computer lab so they can discuss current financial news, manage our real-money investment portfolio, and explore careers in finance. My computer lab is also used during lunch by my regular students to complete their class work. Many times there are not enough computers to simultaneously accommodate both groups of students. My CSIP students are requesting two iMac computers that will be dedicated to monitoring our student-managed investment portfolio and staying up-to-date on financial news effecting our investments. Our real-money portfolio has roughly 40 different investments valued around $2,800.00. You can follow our investments, performance, and online discussions via our web site. Just search Charity Student Investment Project to find us online. Our students also donate 50% of our investment gains to the school Education Foundation.

CSIP offers students an opportunity to improve their lives while learning valuable skills and giving back to the school.

The Wall Street Journal has also recognized the opportunity the CSIP offers its students and has decided to feature us in an high profile article related to the FaceBook IPO. These experiences can't be gained from reading about it, they have to do it and my students are doing it. These experiences will change student lives and you can help! Thank you for your support.
