Fight Obesity with the Science of Health!

My students need pedometers, hula hoops, a food steamer and food processor, human heart model and three cell making kits.

My Students

In 6th grade, my students focus on Life Science and we complete an involved scientific inquiry of the Circulatory System, as well as units on cells and heredity. I want to take these units to the next level so that my students will see how life science relates to their own health and well-being.

I teach 6th grade self-contained at a high poverty, Title I school that serves kindergarten through 8th grade.

This year I have taken on the task of not only teaching my own class Language Arts, Social Studies, and Art, but also teaching the entire 6th grade class (over 100 students) Life Science. We the largest K-8 in the state and we have over 30 languages spoken on campus which makes hands-on learning even more necessary. My students have a difficult time bringing basic supplies to school, and the science supplies at our school are out of date. To kick us while we are down, our normal six-day Outdoor School has been reduced to two days due to budget cuts. My students are bright and extremely interested during science in my class, but with large class sizes and old materials, our options are limited. However, their willingness to roll up their sleeves and get dirty is obvious. We have created a successful school garden that has been maintained for 3 years.

My Project

Every year I have students conduct experiments where they get moving and understand how exercise and eating right affects their heart and body. They love to get moving and we have incorporated a healthy cooking class during the summers to build on these concepts. I am requesting pedometers so that students can accurately track their progress during experiments, and cell-making kits so that students can cooperatively build their own cell models. We already have some cooking supplies from a previously successful Donors Choose project and just need a few more to supply the large number of students. With all of these supplies, we can improve the lives of under-served students and FEED USA :)

For my students, health and science are not just during one period of the day.

It is incorporated into a variety of activities, including the science experiments in class, gardening club after school, healthy cooking projects, and mentoring younger grades what they have learned. Your help can enrich their lives for life, not just a few days in the classroom.
