Ms. C. from VA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 30 copies of the Gary Paulsen novel, The River. Each child needs an individual copy to participate in directed reading instruction.

Imagine 30 children thriving in a print rich environment that fosters a love for reading. Visualize 30 children surrounding their teacher contributing to discussion and participating in a novel study. My classroom is begging for more Gary Paulsen novels. Keep the Paulsen theme going and contribute!
My students love to READ.
They love to learn new vocabulary words and use them in daily conversation. Although, my students are high risk, it doesn't stop them from craving for more literary opportunities. We have been very successful this school year because of consistency. The students have followed a character through a series of novels. The connections made from novel to novel have helped with reading comprehension. The character Brian, in Gary Paulsen novels, has become a member of our classroom this year. Therefore, our goal is to read as many Gary Paulsen novels we can get our hands on! We want Brian to remain in our classroom all year long.
The resources will be used daily to promote fluency, reading comprehension, and mastering the curriculum standards. I will utilize the resources in various ways. My plan is to begin with a read aloud. The magic takes place on a small carpet. Students squish together to participate in the read along. After that, small group work surrounding the daily chapter takes place in a more individualized way. I pull students into small groups and highlight the chapter bringing to the light the various literary concepts we are studying. As we learn, the classroom is full of conversation. It is never quite! The students will discuss literary concepts like onomatopoeia, foreshadowing, and theme. Our classroom is rich in knowledge therefore I'm asking a donor to provide resources to keep the mastery going. Consistency is key to learning! Reading the third book in the series will build upon the students current background knowledge.
The donation of the book The River, will enable my students to remain consistent on our learning approach.
The students have embraced Gary Paulsen and the character Brian. I hope to keep the reading momentum alive to carry us through and finish the school year. The reading momentum will push my students and prepare them for their upcoming middle school transition.
