We are a family school, and what a better way to help our students in the areas of mathematics and reading, than to do it the family way - all together!
My school is a high poverty, school wide Title I school, located in southeast Alaska.
We have a large population (over 50%) of Alaska Native students, and many of our students struggle in the areas of mathematics and reading. Like all students, our students are eager to learn and get excited when they learn something new. We are proud to be known as a family school - our families know that they are their child's first teacher. Unfortunately, some of our families do not have the tools to help their child "attack" today's academic standards and expectations. Many of our families are working at least two jobs to provide for their family, and they need activities that support these standards in a fun and easy way that the family will enjoy. Family Standards will do just that!
My Project
The resources provided will assist my students and their families in creating take-home activities that support the academic standards at their child's grade level. I will host Family Standards nights in which the families will come and learn skills and strategies for mathematics and reading together. The foam sheets will be utilized in creating various manipulatives, such as dominoes, base 10 blocks, tangrams, square tiles, etc. that support mathematics skills. The pumpkin seeds will become an extension activity for the families after listening to From Seed to Plant and learning about sequencing. Families will be able to "make and take" throughout these evenings, so that they will begin to build that toolbox that will help their child succeed. It truly does take a village to raise a child, and our families are a vital part in that process!
