Fairy tales have fascinated children and adults through the years, but have you ever read a fairy tale with a twist? Recently I've discovered that many fairy tales have been rewritten in novel form or narrated from another character's point of view. These fairy tale adaptations are perfect for older students because they are engaging and exciting, and they allow students to explore the characteristics of fairly tales in a unique way. I teach 5th grade at E. E. Elementary in Fayetteville. We have a wonderfully diverse population of students who come from a variety of backgrounds, including many students whose parents are in the military. My class enjoys Literature Circles, which are similar to adult book clubs. Students select books, form reading groups, read, and discuss their books. I have never incorporated a study of fairy tales into my Literature Circles because I need multiple copies of these books in order for the process to work. Funding my proposal will provide multiple copies of two novelized fairy tales, along with a variety of other books and resource materials for my fairy tale unit. In particular, I want multiple copies of The Thief and the Beanstalk, an extremely creative story based on the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk tale. I have also requested multiple copies Ella Enchanted which is a twist on the Cinderella story. To assist my struggling readers with reading and comprehending Ella Enchanted, I've requested the CD version of the novel. In addition, I have requested multiple versions of the Three Little Pigs which I will read aloud to the class as an introduction to the unit. My proposal also includes two anthologies of fairy tales so that students can compare various versions as well as a book of funny fairy tale plays to incorporate drama into our literature study. My class is a really special group of students, and I love seeking out new challenges for them. Many of my students have a quirky sense of humor and a love of anything dramatic, which is why I know they will love these "fairy tales with a twist." Furthermore, they will enjoy performing fairy tale plays as well as writing their own versions. I can't wait to share these books and materials with them!
