This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an urban district in the poorest and most violent neighborhood of our city. My students deserve to have a quality education that will set them up for strong futures.

I am a Special Education teacher who also teaches an eighth grade advisory.

In advisory we focus on building school culture and we get to tackle some of the pressing issues that students deal with in their lives. One of the strongest components to our advisory class is our Sustained Silent Reading time. Together we've read books with themes from suicide to adventure and before this some students said they had never read an entire novel.

My Project

The themes in the novel Fahrenheit 451, from censorship to ignorance and technology, will capture my students' interest and lead to deep thinking and excellent discussion. I know they will be able to access this story with sophistication. I also hope to give them exposure to classic literature beyond the low-level, high-interest books that are thrust upon urban youth.

Reading Fahrenheit 451 will give my students the opportunity to read classic literature that leads them to question what is going on around them.

By the end of this book they will be on their own quest toward true happiness which I hope is through books!
