Fab Lab Makerspace

My Students

In our media center, we are moving and shaking! Some of our programs: Book Ninjas, Mighty Kids, Battle of the Books, Tarheel Junior Historians, and Code Camp. We often host virtual field trips, author visits, google hangouts, etc. Next year, we are launching our first robotics team!

Our Title 1 school of approximately 530 students is over 50% free and reduced lunch.

We are located in the Piedmont Triad area in North Carolina. As manufacturing has declined in recent years, so has our once vibrant economy. Our school is diverse, serving students from a wide range of ethnic groups with a large number of students that come from disadvantaged homes. Many students are being raised by single parents, grandparents or other family members, and, some are in foster care, are transient or, live at the homeless shelter. Currently, we have 50 students that participate in the backpack program. These students receive a backpack of food on Fridays and holidays to take home.

My Project

We hope to create a "makerspace" in a spare room at the back of the media center. This creative space will be one where students can work quietly, alone or in small groups. Students will be given room to create with good quality materials such as Lego's and K'Nex to foster skills in Math and Science. Other creative materials will include an origami station, a computer station, and a "tinkering" station with a variety of reclaimed odds and ends for creating new things. Materials will be kept in clear, plastic containers clearly labeled on existing shelves. Specific task kits will be available as well as materials without any specifics for maximum creativity. Many of our students don't have access to hands on quality toys, so this will be a safe, clean space where they can develop those essential skills through play.

These donations will help serve a large group of students that are often underserved and underexposed.

By allowing students free time to create and play with good quality materials, we will help to foster skills that students will need to be successful in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.
