When I started college, I was certain that journalism was what I was meant to do. However, half way through my degree, I realized that it wasn't so much journalism that inspired me, but instead the teacher.
Now as I start my dream job as a fifth grade teacher, I hope to be my students' "Mrs. Dyer".
Come August I will be teaching a class full of wonderful, bright fifth grade students. Although a small class, their potential is huge and I want to provide every educational outlet I can to make sure the sky is the limit.
Just last year as fourth graders, these twelve students read over 1,000 Accelerated Reader books. Settled in West Virginia, my school is in a low socioeconomic area. My students make the best of what is given to them, and for that I hope to give them as much as I can.
My Project
I have always imagined incorporating journalism into my elementary classroom. I learned how to write, speak, listen, edit, design, and produce works like a professional all from my time spent in journalism. I even received scholarships from it.
If I can successfully cover a few of those standards while sparking an interest in my students, I will be happy. We have a couple of classroom computers for design and I will be bringing my laptop in, but what we do need is a camera.
In addition to the Common Core standards that we will cover in producing our school newspaper, I hope to instill in my students responsibility and pride in what they can produce. This can be done with a camera.
Not only will our newspaper benefit our entire school by producing a publication that will promote unity, but it will also hugely impact each of my students.
This will give them a fun way to work on their writing, speaking, listening, and technology skills, as well as collaboration and teamwork.
My ultimate goal is to introduce my students to a new possible career path, something they can be passionate about, and something of which they can be proud.
