This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom consists of lessons that involve multiple methods of delivery. I wish to extend my students in math by including origami math in the classroom. Many of my students have never heard of origami and this type of hands on math engages even my struggling learners.
All of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
Every child qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. This type of population is generally a grade level below peers in non-Title I schools. Even though my students come in low, they have the greatest potential for learning, and I want to maximize that opportunity with hands on experiences in the art of folding paper.
My Project
The students would use the resources for this project to fold paper following a set of given directions. I have incorporated origami in to some of my geometry instruction as a way to extend their learning. As a result of being exposed to origami, many of my students have the skills to work independently to follow a set of written directions to fold paper. Not only will origami extend their geometry skills, but it will also work on building their skills in reading and following directions, which I value as an important skill they must possess in the real world.
My students have found a love of origami and I would like to facilitate their excitement by giving them the chance to use authentic paper to create origami masterpieces.
As I mentioned above, I think the skills in following directions will serve my students well in the future.
