Exploring the World in Literature

My students need 45 copies of "Life of Pi," by Yann Martel, to read in English II as a way to experience the world and challenging obstacles in life through literature.

My Students

Have you ever read a book and experienced something unlike you ever imagined? I hope that you have. Unfortunately, however, many of my students have not yet had this type of experience with a novel. But then again, they haven't read "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel.

I teach English II in a rural town in central Texas.

The high school is Title I and a large majority of our students are on free and reduced lunches. Needless to say, many of my students do not have very much experience with the world outside of where they live. I believe that I can give my students some amazing world and life experiences through reading intriguing novels.

My Project

With my project, each of the 45 students in English II will have their own copy of "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. This is an amazing book of a young boy, Pi, who is the only survivor of a ship wreck. Well, the only human survivor. Along with him is a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal Tiger. You can imagine the experiences and challenges Pi has in this situation. Along with the interesting plot, the book offers all of the classic elements of literature. The book also offers a look into other cultures, as the writer and main character are not Americans. Along with my love for the book, "Life of Pi" was the 2002 Winner of the Man Booker Prize for fiction literature, it is an international bestseller, and was on the New York Times bestseller list for over 55 weeks. I know that there is something in it for all of my students.

This book would be an amazing experience for each of my students.

By having 45 copies, each student will be able to take their copy home to really dive into the book; we will then be able to have deep and meaningful discussions over the book in class. "Life of Pi" offers so many valuable lessons that my students will be able to connect with and carry with them throughout their life.
