Exploring Informational and Historical Fiction Books
My students need more books for our classroom library, including informational books, especially about the American Revolution, and historical fiction books.
"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." - Victor Hugo.
I want my students to light fires with their reading this year. I would like to infuse them with great literature so they feel the spark of learning and the love of learning.
Approximately 50% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
We are in a district where some schools have a 90% poverty level. Because of this, our school gets much less in financial resources than some of the other schools, and my classroom library is severely lacking in books. I have very few informational books or historical fiction books.
My students care about learning and are so excited to learn new things. They just need the resources to keep them interested and keep their love of learning flowing.
My Project
With these new books, my students will be able to learn about the American Revolution. They will be able to research famous people of the Revolution and have resources available to them that we struggled to find before.
In addition, we will have many more historical fiction books. We are lacking historical fiction books in our classroom. These are so invaluable for students to enjoy their reading and at the same time, they are learning about different periods in time that aren't specifically taught in their grade.
My students will be so much richer in their knowledge with these resources available to them right at their fingertips.
I have been slowly filling in my classroom library with great books for my students to be engaged and continue to explore their love of reading.
This project would give our classroom library a huge boost in areas that our library is lacking. Exposing my students to more historical fiction and information books will be such a benefit for them.
