My students need funds to defray the cost of a science field experience: motor coach to transport 25 students and 5 chaperones and admission costs for the Soo Lock Tour.
Every morning our class begins with inquiry: The students answer a question or elaborate on a previously learned science concept.
My students need real life experiences to apply and extend their knowledge about the water quality, the relationship between the Soo Lock and the Michigan ecosystem.
Our school has a dedicated staff that provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge acquired in new ways using project-based activities.
90% of the students at our school participate in the free/ reduced lunch program.
They are my inspiration! I am always thinking of ways to use the interest of my students to engage them in the learning process and to provide cross-curricular activities to support student achievement. The students in my class love geography: We enjoy Flat Stanley Readers' Workshops to explore the United States and acquire needed reading comprehension skills. Currently, the students are engaged in Geographic Information System (i.e. The GRACE Project) lessons using interactive web applications focused on Michigan waterways: The students study watersheds and examine the waterways from a macroscopic view. Finally, the students will participate in a philanthropic service project, Learning to Give to better understand one's role and the "common good."
My Project
The students will travel from Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan: The students will plan and calculate a route and use a story map application to document their experience with geographic information.
The students will observe the Soo Lock mechanism, explain its function and the relationship between this technology and commerce in Michigan. Additionally, the students will visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum to learn about the historic Great Lakes shipwreck, the Fitzgerald.
The students will utilize the knowledge acquired about living things, a 4th grade science unit to write an informational essay, an opinion essay and a letter to a state legislator about Michigan waterways and/or a water quality issue.
Donations for this field trip project will greatly improve learning for students in my classroom because they will have a "unique" opportunity not afforded to children in this school-community, an opportunity to explore Michigan and its Great Lakes and apply their science knowledge in real life applications.
My students lives will be changed because field experiences engage learners, support the conceptualization of concepts, transference of knowledge and encourages new ways of thinking.
