Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom involves plenty of reading! The goal is to teach my students that there are books that are on their ability level that they can enjoy. I want to challenge my children to explore the world one book at a time.
"Fill your house with stacks of Books, in all the crannies and all the nooks" - Dr. Seuss.
The quote is exactly what I want to do in my classroom. Our classroom consists of 20 uniquely driven and enthusiastic children. They are mostly boys with disabilities ranging from Specific Learning Disability to Autism Spectrum Disorder. My students are extremely below (4-5 grade levels below) their reading grade level, and a higher exposure to books can help improve their self-confidence, drastically. Most of my students read at a preprimer or 2nd grade reading level and they are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Despite the odds against them, they have an active drive to learn to read that I have yet to witness elsewhere. My students are learning to explore the world through reading. My students think that the only books that are available to them are baby books. I want to show them that there are books that they actually want to read on their ability level.
My Project
Our classroom will explore the world though reading. Most of my students have never traveled outside of their small neighborhood. My students are learning to love reading, most of the books that the students read now they are not interested in reading. My goal is to expose the students to books that they are interested in and on their ability level. I instill every day that the only way you can become a better reader is to read. My students have a lot of time to be exposed to books and in turn are growing to love to read. We have such a small class library that all of my students have read all the books. We are also in a trailer and a place to store our all wonderful books is a must. That is why we need a shelving unit for these amazing books.
Our project will make a huge difference in the students lives by exposing the students to books that they want to read.
My students need to read books that are perfect fit books. This allows the students to gain reading confidence and continue to make gains in reading!
