Experiencing the Real World Through Nonfiction Texts

My students need 5 collections containing a rich variety of nonfiction texts to read during Silent Sustained Reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our favorite works of fiction sweep us off our feet, but nonfiction is what makes the world work. In order to help my students become globally-competitive 21st-century learners, we need nonfiction!

My students are compassionate, curious, and committed to 21st century skills.

Because of their interest in the world around them, many of my students delight in reading nonfiction texts. The diversity of our students makes the classroom environment a dynamic place to learn, but unfortunately many of our students come from low-income families. Approximately 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Approximately 30% of our students speak English as a New Language.

My Project

With new nonfiction texts available to them, my students will be able to find reading material on the appropriate level that truly interests them. The power of student interest and engagement cannot be overstated, especially at the middle level. Because these texts are categorized by reading level, students will be able to easily locate the books that will help them to achieve their goals for improvement during their 7th grade year. These nonfiction texts will afford students who do not have access to reading material at home the opportunity to read at school, take books home, and really feel a sense of ownership in their learning. The entire 7th grade class will benefit from these new books!

As young adolescents, my students may not be choosing colleges and careers, but they ARE already making crucial decisions about the importance of literacy in their lives.

With new and engaging texts to choose from, my students will have an opportunity to grapple with complex facets of both history and modern culture. A solid foundation in nonfiction will help my students establish themselves as lifelong readers and lifelong learners.
