Expanding The Classroom With Social Media

My students need upgraded audio/video equipment, including the Shure VP82 microphone and the Sennheiser evolution Plug-on transmitter, to enhance media production for online video lessons for review and parental support at home.

My Students

Do you see children reading textbooks at home to better their grades in class? Those days seem to be over, students are now consumed with video games, social media and television. We live in a digital age where teaching is evolving. Today my classroom goes beyond the walls to reach them digitally.

My students use technology everyday in the SCIENCE classroom.

They are using laptops, IPADS, SmartBoards and online resources. I not only engage my students in class, but draw them into a new way of learning at home by utilizing SOCIAL MEDIA. A teacher today has to change their teaching styles to reach today's students and that means creative ways of using technology. I am reaching students with YouTube (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/hpisdhayes">www.youtube.com/hpisdhayes</a>), Facebook (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/hpisdhayes">www.facebook.com/hpisdhayes</a>), Twitter (https://twitter.com/hpisdhayes) and Blogs (<a href="http://www.theexpandedclassroom.com">www.theexpandedclassroom.com</a>).

My Project

In August of 2011 I made a video teaching students the different pieces of lab equipment and their functions to help them prepare for an upcoming exam. I posted it to YouTube because the students could not take the equipment home. I was astonished as my passing rate for the exam from previous years went from 50% to 90%. Two weeks had passed and I received a comment on Youtube from a teacher in Costa Rica letting me know how much it helped her. WOW! The video reached another country, I was hooked. I now have over 90 videos and views from around the world. This resource is helping parents help their children at home, special needs students are getting to review content I am teaching when, where and as often as they need. By adding the Senheiser wireless transmitter, Sure VP82 microphone and Sony headphones it will permit for crystal clear professional audio to all future videos. The additional Kingston CompactFlash cards will help with video capture and post-production editing.

I have had home-bound students learn when I could not be available.

Students who move in and out of our district are keeping caught up. Students who have had surgery or happen to be out for extended periods of time are not getting behind. I have a 9:00 Science Challenge on Facebook every night during the school year where students compete for silly prizes. Parents are engaged and are seeing dramatic changes.
