This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students who have learning difficulties rarely enjoy school. They are expected to sit still, be quiet and focus on learning all day long.

My students are amazing.

They have various learning difficulties that prevent them from being as successful as their peers in the general education classrooms. It is not because they can't learn, they just learn differently. A lot of my students have a really hard time sitting still. They fiddle. They twitch. The kick their feet back and forth. They tap their pencils. Needless to say, they get distracted easily.

My Project

I imagine a classroom where the chairs are in the corner in a stack and colorful exercise balls are the new norm. Then they would be able to to sit (or bounce!) on the balls (with clear expectations around ball use, of course) while still being asked to do the difficult work they need to do to continue learning.

I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my students.

I push them. I ask them to do things that are very difficult for them. They often get frustrated when they can't do the same things they know their peers can do. Maybe the bouncing would help their brain focus better. Maybe they would feel special.
