My Students

I am a high school math teacher in a room where students fear to enter because of its unappealing ambiance, and cannot own a calculator due to a lack of resources.

MNW Senior High School is located in the heart of Liberty City, one of Miami's oldest neighborhoods where many, if not most, residents have been impacted by the national crisis of diminishing economic opportunities.

As a result, too many of the community's youth suffer from lack of resources. However, the beauty of this neighborhood is magnified by its rich pride and culture. This upcoming school year, I have been given the opportunity to work with 65 incoming freshmen, all of whom did not pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in mathematics in 8th grade. Their continuous struggle to achieve in mathematics has decreased their confidence in believing they can do Algebra. However, I have challenged my students to learn math in a way they have never been taught before. I have asked them to push themselves to figure things out on their own so they may one day think, talk, write, understand, and do math. They believe math is tough but they will soon discover that understanding math is indeed possible.

My Project

As blacks and Latinos, my students are up against counterparts whose paths have already been outlined with successful careers in engineering, physics, and other math related positions. However, my students are fortunate to have been granted the opportunity to be part of a math learning shift. Through the use of technology (printer, laptop, camera, and calculators) my students will begin to question these so called mathematical concepts that were simply made up! Each student will be able to demonstrate his/her ability to recognize an error and fix it by either researching methods (laptop) or looking at exemplar work (camera). My students will also be able to use significant resources (calculators and whiteboards) to figure out the unknown. Basic classroom supplies, including paper, velcro, markers, pencils, notebooks, dividers, erasers, etc will help my students organize their thoughts and work. This project will allow students to engage with mathematics in a more meaningful way.

What I want my students to step out of my classroom with are tools they can use to fight to understand.

Year after year, school after school, they have been convinced that math just "isn't their thing." Their continuous struggle has probably convinced them of such a statement, but through my classroom, we will prove others wrong. Through your generous support, you will be supporting a community, my classroom, that has never been serviced and has been deemed for failure. Let's stop this crisis.
